I'M SMARTER THAN YOU
I accidentally overheard this young man repeating a story about a conversation he had with his mother in an arrogant tone of voice. They were talking about politics when he said to her, “OH, MOM, don’t try to argue with me. You know I’m smarter and better educated than you.” Every mother’s hope is that her kids will be smarter, have more and enjoy a rich and full life but although he might have been right, I cringe as a mother to think that a son could talk that way to the woman who brought him into this planet. I have been noticing that a lot of Millennials portray that kind of attitude. Each generation brings something good and something not so good into the next one.
I am a baby boomer and I feel respect for the Traditionalist or Silent Generation before me. They are an important part of our history. They fought in World War II and Vietnam and gave our nation freedom. And then, next are the Baby Boomers. I think we are awesome. We are a generation with principals and very hard working, driven people. We brought affluence to the country. In a way, we have ‘made the bed’ for the Millennials. Generation Y and X have not necessarily been notorious for big changes except for their presence over the years. But my dear Millennials are a very interesting demographic. One of the characteristics that predominate with them in general is the fact that they feel entitled. They have grown up with a cell phone in one hand, a computer in the other accompanied by the vast technology that we have now. With the information so accessible they have forgotten the importance of it. Consequently, they are restless. They are smart. They are dynamic. But their drive is different than other generations. They do not mind leaving behind a good job or a good situation to stand up for what they believe.
Being proud of yourself is different than being arrogant. This is why the comment made by the son to his mom upset me. The young man forgot that it was his mother who changed his diapers. And who knows? She might have to eat frijoles in order to pay for his education. One of my goals is to understand and embrace the Millennials and the new generation, Generation Z. I hate to sound like a little old lady with a shaky voice saying “everything in the past was better.” But maybe it was….
