A few days ago we went on another shoe buying trip to Leon Guanajuato, Mexico. Yes, anotherrrrr shoe show! It is fascinating how from country to country it’s a different world. That's the beauty of the planet. When we were there, a very famous Mexican singer/composer, Juan Gabriel, suddenly passed away. It was the talk of the shoe show. As we visited different companies, different comments and information about him was provided. How many songs did he compose - 600? 1,200? 1,800? How many decades has he been on the top ten in popularity? 3 or 4 or 5? We would talk about which songs were our favorite and what memories his songs would bring up, etc… His songs are typical for hopeless romantics. Imagine this… a big Mariachi band and either a broken heart or a heart that is very much in love - you choose. He had a song to sing for you! “My darling, every moment of my life I think about youuuuuu, queriiidaaaaaa (darling).”
So, the shoe show went on like that. There wasn’t anyone that had not had either a broken heart or had been so much in love that they could not to relate to his lyrics. The whole country is mourning his death. It was so sudden and he was only 67 years old. Juan Gabriel had so many upcoming concerts and duets with other artists; his loss is a shame. I can’t help but think about my own mortality or think about losing any of my loved ones but this time is not about me. It is about Juan Gabriel.
The day we were coming back from Leon, Paula, my daughter and I were at our gate waiting for our departure and there was a coffee place with a big screen television where they were showing videos of Juan Gabriel at his concerts. Paula and I were singing along to his songs, talking and laughing. We sat there remembering times in our lives when these lyrics applied to us… “COME TO ME THAT I AM SUFERINGGG IN THIS LONELINESSS (VEN A MI QUE ESTOY MURIENDO EN ESTA SOLEDADDDDD).”
We were so sucked into our memories and his songs that we surprisingly heard Paula’s name being called over the intercom. Everybody was already on board except for us. As we boarded the plane, we were rushing and giggling but the passengers and flight crew gave us dirty looks which made us laugh even more. I took my seat, closed my eyes as the plane took off and in my mind I was singing QUERIDAAAAAAA.
Are you familiar with his songs?
Let me know which one was your favorite song from him.
