Valentines is in just a few days and it compels me to write on the topic of love.
I don’t really want to write about the love between a mother and her child, the love between siblings, or even the love for shoes! I want to write about ROMANTIC LOVE. The love between two people that brings them together inexplicably but surely… the love that connects two people from the inside out… the love that sends fire through your bones…. Oh I’m getting a little carried away… YOU know the kind of love between two people that I’m talkin’ about!
Why is it that with all of the billions of people living on this planet, finding the right (“right”) love is like winning the lottery?!! Finding that person who appeals to us beyond the physical, who sweeps us off of our feet… as we get older it seems more and more impossible. I would like to be like a six year old and say “It’s NOT fair”! I know this isn’t really true but this is how it feels sometimes. Although one of my long time clients, who is now 89, recently remarried and is thrilled!
When you are in love, life really does seem “la vie en rose” as Edith Piaf sings. When it feels “right” you let go of your vulnerability, your fear, your apprehension and you dive into it. Sometimes we lose our head, sometimes we lose our heart. We take the risk! Why? Because we all want physical and emotional intimacy; tenderness; closeness; security; and even to have our minds read! (Financial security is pretty high up on the list too!)
Is that too much to ask? It shouldn’t be.
When we find that love, we sometimes lose it. Our hearts break. The pain is physical, the heart literally breaks, it shatters, it cries. Here I go again with another emotional recount! I can’t help who I am and Valentines plus recent occurrences make me think of this!
We like to believe that as we age, we experience love accordingly, more mature, wiser. Guess what? You all know this is not true! When you love, you are just as vulnerable and naïve at 60 as 20! It is undeniably one of the best and most human of experiences: to love and to be loved…ROMANTICALLY!
I hope that you are one of those people who won the lottery with the partner you have in your life. You all are inspirations and most of all hope! Treat that person kindly, buy him or her a pair of nice high heels for Valentines ;)
In the meantime, I’ll be buying lottery tickets!
