I have my favorite spot in Santa Fe! It might not be right in the city but not too far. For some people, it might be a hike at Atalaya or walking on the Plaza, perhaps Canyon Road, the patio at Sena Plaza or Hyde Park at the Ski Basin but for me it's La Bajada. When I leave town and I get to La Bajada, my trip begins at that moment. When I'm coming back and I'm at the height of La Bajada...I'm home! It's a beautiful view of the landscape. To the right, you see the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and further back is the City of Santa Fe. To the left, you can see the gorgeous openness of the land, and a lot of the time I enjoy the spectacular sunsets. I have experienced this view countless times. I don't mean to get DRAMATIC but if I wasn't dramatic, it wouldn't be the authentic ME....
I do think of mortality often and maybe that comes from my Mexican side but lately I've been thinking that I would want my ashes to be spread there at La Bajada. I could have a beautiful ceremony with all my friends and family, all dressed up in white wearing Goler shoes! Particularly on a beautiful day with one of those spectacular sunsets. BUT, I read that they want to allow gravel mining at
La Bajada. So I said to myself, “WHAT THE HECK? YOU CANNOT DO THAT TO ME, YOU CANNOT RUIN MY SPOT!” There is no other place in the world like La Bajada, it means so much to me! I'm talking about myself but I'm sure many people both locals and tourists feel the same.
I get the concept of growing and changes but not at the cost of our beautiful landscape. “Am I crazy?...Is there anyone else who agrees?” Even if I'm not dying yet, I still would like for the view to be there like it always has been.
